About Perahera
Kandy Esala Perahera
The Kandy Esala Perahera, also known as the Festival of the Tooth, is one of Sri Lanka’s most spectacular cultural and religious events. Held annually in the historic city of Kandy, this centuries-old procession honors the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha, which is enshrined in the revered Temple of the Tooth (Sri Dalada Maligawa).
For ten glorious nights, the streets of Kandy come alive with vibrant traditional dancers, drummers, fire-breathers, whip crackers, and beautifully adorned elephants carrying the sacred casket. Locals and visitors from around the world gather to witness this unique celebration of devotion, culture, and artistry.
A Celebration of Heritage and Devotion
Dating back to the 3rd century AD, the Esala Perahera combines age-old rituals with breathtaking performances, showcasing Sri Lanka’s rich cultural heritage. Each night of the Perahera holds deep spiritual significance, with the final night-the Randoli Perahera-being the most magnificent and widely attended.
